SPECIES OVERVIEW: THE PACK-KIN
The Pack-Kin are a highly evolved, post-apocalyptic species of canine descent. Forged in the crucible of a shattered world, they have transcended their feral ancestors to become the new apex inheritors of the ruins. While they maintain the anatomical framework of canines, their cognitive and societal development rivals that of the humans who came before them. Despite their physical differences, all Pack-Kin share a unified genetic pool, meaning they exhibit the exact same potential for base coats (Void, Ashen, Soil, Rust) and all associated standard and rare markings.
Intelligence and Cognition
Pack-Kin possess fully human-like intelligence. They are capable of abstract reasoning, complex philosophical thought, and intricate problem-solving. They possess a fully developed spoken language comprised of varied vocalizations, modulated growls, and complex body language that allows them to convey nuanced concepts, history, and tactical information.
They understand mechanics, physics, and basic chemistry, allowing them to craft tools, build defensive structures, and utilize salvaged Old World technology. They experience a full spectrum of emotion—grief, joy, spite, and ambition—and create art, maintain oral histories, and honor their dead.
Diet and Sustenance
Survival in a desolate landscape has forced the Pack-Kin to adapt into highly efficient, opportunistic omnivores. While their primary biological drive requires high-protein meat sourced from hunting mutated wildlife or pest populations, they actively forage for edible flora, roots, and fungi.
Intelligent agriculture has begun to take root in many packs, with members cultivating hardy, radiation-resistant crops within protected greenhouse ruins. They understand food preservation, utilizing salt-curing, smoking, and drying techniques to ensure their stores survive harsh, unforgiving winters.
Reproduction and Pup Litters
The harsh reality of their environment has led to an evolutionary shift in reproduction. Pack-Kin have smaller, more manageable litters compared to their ancestors, typically birthing only two to three pups at a time. This allows the community to invest heavily in the survival and education of each individual child.
Pup-rearing is a fiercely communal effort. While biological parents form strong bonds with their offspring, the entire pack takes responsibility for feeding, protecting, and teaching the young. Pups are rigorously educated in language, history, scavenging safety, and combat from the moment they are weaned, ensuring they are productive members of society by adolescence.
Community Structure and Daily Life
Pack-Kin do not live as wild animals; they live as organized societies. A "Pack" functions more like a clan or a guild, operating on meritocratic or egalitarian systems where leaders are chosen for their wisdom, tactical acumen, or resourcefulness rather than brute dominance alone.
They inhabit the reinforced skeletons of Old World architecture—subway stations, fortified apartment complexes, and gutted factories. These dens are meticulously organized into sleeping quarters, food caches, infirmaries, and crafting stations. Members wear crafted harnesses, protective gear, and identifying garments woven from scavenged textiles or cured leathers. Trade networks exist between different packs, relying on a barter system exchanging salvaged medicine, rare crafting materials, and preserved food.
Subspecies Classifications
While unified in mind and society, the Pack-Kin have biologically diverged into three distinct subspecies to conquer the diverse challenges of the wasteland. Select a classification array to run full structural analysis:
